Rick Santorum campaigns for Mitt Romney

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said in a Monday interview with an Iowa radio station that his party’s presumptive nominee hasn’t been in touch with his one-time rival as part of the vice presidential vetting process.

“You’d have to ask (former Massachusetts) Governor Romney who he’s considering,” Santorum said, but “I haven’t been in touch with the Romney campaign, so I suspect that we’re not under active consideration at this point.”

Santorum, the former U.S. senator who was among the last men standing in this year’s GOP nomination contest, repeatedly called President Obama “dangerous” and urged his local followers to work against the president’s re-election in Iowa — “one of those states we gotta win.”

“I am ever more energized to make sure we elect congressmen and senators to keep the majority in the House and win back the Senate, but we absolutely must defeat Barack Obama,” Santorum told a crowd of about 150.

“Having a president who … routinely runs roughshod of over the courts, the Congress, and the American public with what he wants to do is a dangerous man who has proven he is not capable of leading this country effectively,” Santorum said.

“We all know he came to Iowa somewhat unknown in this state and he won Iowa. He has a big impact in the state,” Rob Gettemy, a local GOP organizer who ran for U.S. House in 2010, said of Santorum.

“If my campaigning will be of help to candidates, conservatives who want to come to Washington, D.C., and want to shake things up and really return this country back to the governing principles that made it the greatest country in the history of the world, then I’ll be active and involved,” he said. “At least a lot of folks are calling and asking for help, so that’s a good sign that maybe we can be helpful there.”

Asked whether Romney was properly “prosecuting” the campaign against President Barack Obama, Santorum did not offer a clear opinion of Romney’s campaign style, but said that the driving “issue in this race has to be Obama.”
