‘Red’ director Robert Schwentke set to direct ‘Divergent’ sequel ‘Insurgent’
Summit Entertainment has found its director for Insurgent, the sequel to next month’s Divergent that will launch the film series based on the extremely popular Veronica Roth’s sci-fi novels.
Deadline reports that Robert Schwentke will helm the film, which is being written by Akiva Goldsman based on a draft by Brian Duffield.
Director Neil Burger will not return for the second film as post-production on the first movie overlapped with pre-production for Insurgent.
Schwentke is currently attached to the serial killer pic Entering Hades for New Regency as well as The Finest Hours, the Disney drama about a Coast Guard rescue attempt off the coast of Cape Cod after a pair of oil tankers are destroyed during a blizzard in 1952.
His most recent movie was Universal’s Jeff Bridges-Ryan Reynolds box office bomb R.I.P.D. Schwentke directed the surprise hit Red in 2010.
Divergent stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Tony Goldwyn, Ashley Judd, and Kate Winslet.
Divergent arrives in theaters on March 21, 2014.
Insurgent comes to theaters March 20, 2015.
The third film in the trilogy, Allegiant, is set for March 18, 2016.
