Rand Paul talks war on drugs, courting Evangelical support, says ‘I’m not a libertarian. I’m a libertarian Republican’

Rand Paul has a busy schedule, which includes stops in two other crucial presidential primary states, New Hampshire and South Carolina. A May 20 appearance with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in New Hampshire aims to help the party connect with Paul’s libertarian and tea party base. Talking to Evangelicals, Paul addresses his stance on the drug war.

“I’m not advocating everyone go out and run around with no clothes on and smoke pot,” he said. “I’m not a libertarian. I’m a libertarian Republican. I’m a constitutional conservative.”

This weekend Paul headlined the  a sold-out Republican Party dinner in Iowa.

Several pastors who attended the meeting said they came away impressed, though some remained unconvinced. “I don’t know that my concern has gone away, but I appreciated how he responded to the question,” said the Rev. Clegguart Mitchell, senior pastor of the Leon Bible Church in Leon, Iowa.

In an interview a day before his Iowa trip, Paul, 50, also tried to make clear just what kind of politician he is. “To some, ‘libertarian’ scares people,” he said. “Some of them come up to me and they say, ‘I kind of like you, but I don’t like legalizing heroin.’ And I say, ‘Well, that’s not my position.’ ”

David Lane, a longtime organizer of evangelical pastors and voters, who orchestrated the Israel trip and the Friday lunch, said Paul was seeking to demonstrate that he can be a comfortable fit for Christian conservatives despite the more unconventional views of many of his most fervent supporters.

“He’s closer to our philosophy than he is to what I would define as the hyper-libertarian position,” Lane said.

Later in May, Paul plans to deliver a formal address at the Ronald Reagan Library in California laying out his vision for the future of the party.

  1. Is Libertarian the new political normal? » The Buell Review says:

  2. Malcolm Kyle says:

Prohibitionism is intensely, rabidly, frantically, frenetically, hysterically anti-freedom.

An important feature of prohibitionism (which it closely shares with fascism) is totalitarianism. That means:
A police state apparatus; widespread surveillance, arbitrary imprisonment or even murder of political opponents, mass-incarceration, torture, etc.

Like despicable, playground bullies, prohibitionists are vicious one moment, then full of self-pity the next. They whine and whinge like lying, spoilt brats, claiming they just want to “save the little children”, but the moment they feel it safe to do so, they used brute force and savage brutality against those they claim to be defending.

Prohibitionists actually believe that they can transcend human nature and produce a better world. They allow only one doctrine, an impossible-to-obtain drug-free world. All forms of dissent, be they common-sense, scientific, constitutional, or democratic, are simply ignored, and their proponents vehemently persecuted.

During alcohol prohibition (1919-1933), all profits went to enrich thugs and criminals. While battling over turf, young men died every day on inner-city streets. A fortune was wasted on enforcement that could have been far more wisely allocated. On top of the budget-busting prosecution and incarceration costs, billions in taxes were lost. Finally, in 1929, the economy collapsed. Does that sound familiar?

I VOTED FOR President George Herbert Walker Bush (1992), President George Walker Bush (2000&2004), Senator John McCain (R-AZ; 2008) AND Governor Gary Johnson (2012). IF Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) IS A PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE IN 2016, I WILL VOTE FOR HIM – UNLESS, Governor Jeb Bush (R-FL) IS RUNNING.

BUT, Senator Paul IS ABOUT TO FALL-OFF A VERY SKINNY TIGHTROPE. TRYING TO “COURT” RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVES WILL DO NOTHING, BUT, LIGHTEN HIS WALLET. THIS “LIBERTARIAN/LIBERTARIAN-REPUBLICAN GAME” HE IS PLAYING IS SILLY. Senator Paul KNOWS THE REASON WHY HE IS A “MEDIA DARLING” IS BECAUSE HIS FATHER U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), IS VIEWED AS THE “GODFATHER OF LIBERTARIANISM.” I HAVE ALREADY READ THAT MANY CONSIDER Senator Paul TO BE “JUST ANOTHER NEO-CON.”

THIS “WISHY-WASHYNESS” WILL ONLY PLACE A DEMOCRAT IN THE 2017 Oval Office.
