Former Texas Congressman Ron Paul won the CPAC straw poll in 2010 and 2011.

The younger Paul edged out the win over Florida Senator Marco Rubio who received 23 percent of the vote.

Former senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) took 8 percent, while New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), who was not invited to CPAC, took 7 percent.

Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee,  was supported by 6% of the nearly 3,000 CPAC voters.

Last year, Mitt Romney came out on top in the CPAC poll, foreshadowing his eventual nomination as Republican presidential candidate.

Since 1976, only Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush have won the CPAC straw poll and gone on to win the White House.

  1. CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON says:

I KNOW NOTHING OF Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). BUT, THIS STRAW POLL INDICATES THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS STILL TRYING TO FIGURE-OUT WHO IT IS. THE TOP VOTE-GETTER (Senator Rand Paul) DOES NOT KNOW WHOSE SIDE HE IS ON – SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES, OR, THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY. THE RUNNER-UP (Senator Marco Rubio) IS CLEARLY A “COLORED” RESPONSE TO THE KENYAN’S SUCCESS. AFTER THAT, YOU HAVE A STEADFAST SOCIAL-CONSERVATIVE (Senator Rick Santorum), A MEDIA DARING (Governor Chris Christie) AND A FLIP-FLOPPER ON POLICY (U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan).

THE KENYAN’S RACE HAS PLACED THE REPUBLICAN-PARTY IN A “TAIL-SPIN.” IT SEEMS THE Tea Party IS ON “ITS WAY OUT;” SO, Senator Santorum HAS NO CHANCE. IF REPUBLICANS PLAY “TIT-FOR-TAT” ON RACE WITH Senator Rubio, DEMOCRATS WILL SEE IT FOR THE “SHAM” IT TRULY IS. THAT LEAVES – PRACTICALLY – Senator Paul ….. A BIG QUESTION MARK.
