Quotes: Donald Trump defending Planned Parenthood
Super Tuesday, March 1: Trump not only does he defend Planned Parenthood, he attacks pro-life voters who disagree with him, dismissing the notion he is not a true conservative because he supports Planned Parenthood, insisting he is “just doing what’s right.”
“Look, Planned Parenthood has done very good work for many, many — for millions of women,” Trump said in a news conference Tuesday night. “And I’ll say it, and I know a lot of the so-called conservatives, they say that’s really … cause I’m a conservative, but I’m a common-sense conservative.”
Trump said he would not fund Planned Parenthood “as long as you have the abortion going on,” but noted the “millions of people — and I’ve had thousands of letters from women — that have been helped.”
“And this wasn’t a set-up. This was women writing letters. But I’m going to be really good for women, I’m going to be good for women’s health issues, it’s very important to me. Very important to me,” he said.

“I am pro-life, I am totally against abortion having to do with Planned Parenthood, but millions and millions of women, [with] cervical cancer, breast cancer, are helped by Planned Parenthood” – February 25, 2016
February 14 2016 Saturday night’s Republican presidential debate:
Trump said he opposes taxpayer funding but added, “It does do wonderful things but not as it relates to abortion.”
Trump then added that “there are wonderful things having to do with women’s health” when it comes to Planned Parenthood, “but not when it comes to abortion.”
“We have to help women,” Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in a December interview. “So we have to look at the positives, also, for Planned Parenthood.”
Then, Trump said he opposes federal grants going toward Planned Parenthood’s abortion practices, but noted that abortions make up a “small part” of the organization.
“There’s two Planned Parenthoods, in a way,” he said in that December interview. “You have it as an abortion clinic. Now that’s actually a fairly small part of what they do, but it’s a brutal part. And I’m totally against it and I wouldn’t do that. They also, however, service women.”
“Maybe unless they stop with the abortions, we don’t do the funding for the stuff that we want,” he said. “I’m totally against the abortion aspect of Planned Parenthood, but I’ve had many women, I’ve had many Republican, conservative women come up and say Planned Parenthood serves a good function, other than that one aspect.”
He told CNN earlier in the day in December that he would examine the Planned Parenthood’s practices to determine the “good aspects” that help women.
“I’m sure they do some things properly and good and that are good for women, and I would look at that, and I would look at other aspects also,” he said. “But we have to take care of women.”
During an interview with Chris Wallace of Fox News – October 2015
“Would you be willing to shut down the government in order to defend Planned Parenthood or to put some other key policy goals?” Wallace asked.
TRUMP: “I do not want to say that because I want to show unpredictability. You have to. You can’t just go around and say that. But Planned Parenthood should absolutely be defunded. I mean if you look at what’s going on with that, it’s terrible. And many of the things should be defunded and many things should be cut.”
Trump made the comments on the Laura Ingraham show, according to a Daily Caller report:
Laura Ingraham: Yesterday, Planned Parenthood was exposed again in an eighth video released by the Center for Medical Progress. Do you still believe there are two Planned Parenthoods or is it time to defund this organization?
Donald Trump: Well, you should defund anyway because they are doing the abortions. It is like an abortion factory, which is terrible. So you should defund anyway. But those videos are horrible. Every time you see them, they get worse and worse. And it’s not only that, the messengers are so bad. There always, I mean these people, what they say and the way they, it’s like you are selling parts to an automobile or something. It’s a terrible situation going on with Planned Parenthood. There’s no question about it.
Donald Trump appeared on the Sean Hannity show on August 11 and appeared to be clearly defending Planned Parenthood in the wake of shocking Center for Medical Progress videos.
“They do good things,” Trump began.
“There’s two Planned Parenthoods, in a way. You have it as an abortion clinic. Now that’s actually a fairly small part of what they do, but it’s a brutal part and I’m totally against it,” Trump said.
“They also, however, service women,” Trump said, adding later, “We have to help women. A lot of women are helped. So we have to look at the positives for Planned Parenthood.”
Trump appeared on Chris Cuomo on CNN’s New Day saying that he opposes federal funding going to Planned Parenthood to pay for abortions, but that he’s OK with tax dollars going to the group to pay for other services that it provides.
“The problem that I have with Planned Parenthood is the abortion situation. It is like an abortion factory, frankly,” Trump began. “And you can’t have it. And you just shouldn’t be funding it. That should not be funded by the government, and I feel strongly about that.”
Then Cuomo asked Trump if he could support funding for other Planned Parenthood efforts, such as providing contraception to women.
“What I would do when the time came, I’d look at the individual things they do, and maybe some of the individual things they do are good,” Trump continued, with characteristic eloquence. “I know a lot of the things are bad. But certainly the abortion aspect of it should not be funded by government, absolutely.”
And he went on: “I would look at the good aspects of [Planned Parenthood], and I would also look, because I’m sure they do some things properly and good and that are good for women, and I would look at that, and I would look at other aspects also. But we have to take care of women.”
