Queensland Police: 18-year-old man charged with the rape and murder of Joan Canino Ryther
In a follow-up to an earlier story, Queensland Police have announced they have charged a man with the murder, rape and the unlawful assault of 27-year-old Joan Canino Ryther, according to a news release June 1.
The yet unnamed 18-year-old man is due to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court today.
On the evening of May 21, Joan Ryther was walking to her evening shift at a local McDonalds when she was viciously murdered and raped. She was eight weeks pregnant at the time of the crime.
Her partially clothed body was discovered on the morning of May 22 at the front of a residence on Leichhardt Street.
Joan’s husband, Cory Ryther, welcomes the news from police and will be in court on Monday; however, Ryther said, “It in no means diminishes my loss but it certainly does give me something to tell her family when I take her home”, according to an ABC News report today.
On the Queensland Police Facebook page, numerous people commented on the arrest with two general themes: RIP Joan and their baby and Props to the Queensland Police in this investigation, as one person posted:
“Well done to our dedicated Police Officers getting this evil animal of our streets”.
