Pro-Israel lobby voices opposition to Rand Paul’s ‘Stand with Israel Act’, bill is blocked in Senate

The idea of cutting off aid to the Palestinian Authority unless they they agree to a ceasefire and recognize the right of Israel to exist sounds like a great idea for supporters of Israel, right? Think again.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul introduced a bill that would do just that–making all future aid to the Palestinian government conditional upon the new unity government putting itself on the record recognizing the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish state and agreeing to a lasting peace. That legislation was called the ‘Stand With Israel Act Of 2014′, or Senate bill, S. 2265 and it received opposition from the largest pro-Israel lobby in the country and failed to garner enough support in the US Senate, a Senate full of people who tout “pro-Israel” rhetoric incessantly.

Earlier this week it was reported that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) opposed the bill saying, “We are not supporting the Paul bill. We believe the law currently on the books is strong and ensures that aid is contingent on key conditions that help maintain America’s influence, keep Israel secure, and advance the peace process.”

The mission of AIPAC is to strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of Israel and the United States, according to their website. Ironic? Paul is quoted as saying that he is “very troubled” by AIPAC’s decision not to back his proposed legislation, which he drafted in response to the recent Fatah-Hamas rapprochement.

On Thursday, the bill could not get unanimous consent in the Senate thus blocking the bill, prompting Paul to say Thursday, “I am deeply disappointed and disturbed by the Senate’s inability to stand with me in defense of Israel today. My support will not waiver and I hope the United States Senate will prevail in cutting off American aid to those that refuse to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.”

On a floor speech (watch video),  Paul asked, “How can you object to something that calls for the recognition of Israel as state? How can you object to and how can you continue to allow the flow of money to a group that calls for the destruction of Israel?”

Paul said speaking of AIPAC in a Newsmax interview, “I think the American people, if they knew that, would be very, very upset and think, you know what, those people are no longer lobbying in favor of America and Israel if they’re not willing to put restrictions on aid to Palestine.”
