Princeton hopes to make Bexsero available for students in December

In a follow-up to an earlier story, Princeton University announced today via email that they will be receiving the EU/Australia approved meningococcal meningitis vaccine, Bexsero, to offer to immunize students against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B, according to an email sent out Nov.18.

According to the email:

The CDC is preparing to recommend that all Princeton University undergraduate students (those who live in dormitories or off campus) and graduate students who live in dormitories receive a vaccine that helps protect against meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B. The CDC would recommend that other members of the University community with functional and anatomic asplenia (including sickle cell disease) and late complement component deficiencies also should receive the vaccine. Based on the CDC’s assessment of the cases at Princeton, only these groups would be recommended to receive the vaccine.

Pending final CDC approval, the University is prepared to accept these recommendations and make arrangements to provide access to this vaccine as soon as possible.

The University says they hope to have the first of the two-part series available for those groups listed above in early December.

The second dose of the series would be administered in February. They clearly state that the vaccine  would be made available to these groups only.

The two doses of the vaccine, Bexsero, are required for maximum protection. Princeton says they will cover the cost of the vaccine for the student population that requests it.

This follows the university reporting seven confirmed cases of meningococcal meningitis B since March 2013.
