Phoenix: Pregnant mother, Jasmine Ponce killed by Chris Kraft, baby boy survived

A pregnant woman in north Phoenix was shot and killed, but doctors were able to save her baby.

Jasmine Ponce

Jasmine Ponce, 23, attempted to stop a heated argument between Christopher Michael Kraft, 24, with neighbors at his apartment complex near 19th Avenue and Union Hills Drive. The police report detailed the incident, noting that a dispute escalated when threats were made to retrieve guns.

Ponce grabbed Kraft and his gun discharged striking Ponce in the head.

The woman was 36 weeks pregnant and emergency personnel acted quickly and even though Jasmine did not survive her injuries, doctors safely delivered a baby boy. It’s noteworthy that the Go Fund Me set up for her funeral state that she was only 33 weeks pregnant, see the full statement below.

Jasmine’s aunt Lillian Morales spoke to different press outlets, describing Jasmine as “sweet” growing up and understandably saying that she and family feel “broken that her children have no momma.”

Jasmine also had a daughter who was around one-and-a-half years old.

Arizona Department of Child Safety has protective custody of both children, and several relatives say they would be willing to raise them.

Kraft was arrested for second-degree murder and tampering with evidence as he reportedly tried to dispose of his handgun which was recovered by police in a garage bin in the parking lot.

Kraft is being held on a $150,000 bond.
