Philippines: Pangasinan health officials say ‘mystery disease’ not ‘flesh-eating bacteria’

The mysterious “flesh-eating” disease being reported recently the province of Pangasinan by Philippine media outlets is not necrotizing fasciitis according to provincial health officer, Dr. Ma. Ana Theresa de Guzman.

ABS-CBN news program, Bandila, reported Monday about the mysterious flesh-eating disease in two remote areas in the province of Pangasinan.

However, the “infections” have been ruled out by Dr. de Guzman, who personally visited the two patients, Grace Clasara of Sta. Barbara, 21; and Alex Maganes, 19, of Villasis, on Tuesday at their respective homes to see their condition.

The physician found that one has long been afflicted with leprosy and the other one of a severe case of psoriasis.

In addition, based on the amount of time the two had been afflicted, she was easily able to “rule out” necrotizing fasciitis, or “flesh-eating bacteria”.

Provincial Information Officer Butch Velasco called on the media to be more careful in reporting cases like this as false reports might cause widespread panic in Pangasinan.

Reports also linked these two cases to a “prophetic message” by an Indian prophet named Sadju which led a gathering for the religious group “Jesus Ministries” at the Cuneta Astrodome last April 2013.

Part of his “message” was about a “grievous disease” that will spread all over the world. He described the illness as something that will consume the flesh of men and will pierce through the bones. He claimed that this disease will begin from the province of Pangasinan.

Health officials responded:

“Let us not believe this prophesy made by the prophets of doom,” said Velasco, hinting it was this supposed prophesy that may have fanned the unverified report that a disease caused by a flesh-eating bacteria has already afflicted victims in the province.

I am a Catholic person, not much of a Sunday church goer because of my job, but I believe in God, and I have faith in Him. I just saw the prophecy video and this warning came before the actual catastrophe in Leyte and Samar. Was this just a coincidence? Is it really impossible that God could communicate through other medium/religion, not just Catholics? I respect people of other religions and I do not discount that they too are children of God, in my view, and that God could communicate through them. Why, what was wrong with what they said, “…unless we repent for our sins, unless some if not all of the government corrupt officials would change, then God will punish the nation”? I am all for punishment of the corrupt people, sparing the innocents, but if this has to happen, that the blood of these innocents lie in their corrupt officials’ hands, then so be it…With this prophecy about the flesh eating disease, can this be impossible to happen? Or, down the road if there will be disturbing cases, could this be just another coincidence? I am not saying I believe the prophet and the prophecy. I believe in CHANGE, and when people change, repent, pray for forgiveness of sins, only then will God’s act be the final judgment, and His will be done on earth as it is on heaven!
