Philippines: More than 300 cases of Chikungunya reported in Antique
Philippines health officials are reporting an outbreak of the mosquito borne viral disease in Patnongon, Antique, according to a Dr. Eric Tayag’s Twitter account.
According to health officials, as of April, there has been 313 cases of Chikungunya fever.
National Epidemiology Center head Dr. Eric Tayag said the symptoms of Chikungunya include fever, rashes, severe joint pains, severe, persistent headache, red eyes, difficulty in directly looking at light, nausea, and measles-like rashes.
Dr. Tayag sent out numerous tweets from Thursday into Friday concerning this outbreak:
Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Chikungunya virus is a member of the genus Alphavirus, in the family Togaviridae. Chikungunya fever is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings (e.g., joint swelling), laboratory testing, and the possibility of exposure to infected mosquitoes. There is no specific treatment for chikungunya fever; care is based on symptoms. Chikungunya infection is not usually fatal.
