Police report that Oliver “Boyet” Doctor, who was identified by Bareiro’s daughter, Maria Stephany, killed the writer at about 10 pm yesterday.
“He suddenly shot my father several times causing his instantaneous death,” she said. The daughter is currently under very strict security by authorities. Media accounts report that a possible “love triangle” may have been the motive.
CNN reports that in 2009, Barreiro survived an attempt to his life when an unidentified person hurled a grenade at him while he was about to enter his home.
The killing Friday follows the murder of three other Philippine journalists in recent weeks. Radio commentator Cosme Maestrado, 46, was shot dead in front of a public market in the southern port city of Ozamiz on August 27, radio reporter Teodoro Escanilla, 57, was shot inside his home in a fishing town in rural Sorsogon province on August 19 and newspaper reporter Gregory Ybanez, 67, was gunned down in front of his house in Tagum city on Aug. 18.
The Philippines has long been one of the world’s most dangerous places for journalists.
