Philippines: Firecracker injuries up in 2013, injuries in children down

Every year at this time in the Philippines, warnings come out from health and other officials about the dangers of firecrackers and fireworks, and every year, hundreds get injured from the New Year’s festivities and unfortunately, some die.

2013 was no exception. According to the Philippines Department of Health (DOH), there were 599 firecracker-related injuries, 589 were from actual firecracker injuries (mostly from piccolo), one firecracker ingestion and nine from stray bullets.

This is up from 2012 numbers that show firecracker-related injuries during the same period were at 419 with 409 of which from actual firecrackers, one firecracker ingestion and nine stray bullet casualties.

The Associated Press reports that at least eight people were killed celebrating the New Year. In northern province of Cagayan, a fireworks fountain display packed with firecrackers exploded and killed a 19-year-old man, while an infant boy was killed by a bullet that went through the roof of the family’s house in Ilocos Sur province.

In addition, the military and police said six of the dead were killed when a homemade bomb exploded at a kiosk in the southern town of Sumisip in Basilan island province during a New Year’s party late Tuesday.

Assistant Secretary of the DOH, Dr. Eric Tayag, rattled off a list of fireworks injury statistics earlier today on Twitter:

  • This year only 24% of those w/ FW injuries were children <10 yrs old compared to 31% in 2012,
  • This year only 36% of FW injuries were among bystanders compared to 44% in 2012,
  • Amputations from FW injuries down to 1% this year from 3% last year,
  • Eye injuries from FW injuries down to 14% from 19% in 2012 and,
  • 45% of FW injuries due to piccolo up from 40% in 2012

The DOH plans on spearheading an effort to have fireworks banned in the country.
