‘Pete’s Dragon’ detailed by Bryce Dallas Howard, ‘no singing’

Disney’s D23 Expo brought fans the first look at their new adaptation/remake of the 1977 classic film Pete’s Dragon, starring Bryce Dallas Howard.

In fact, the Jurassic World star was onhand to discuss the film and tease the audience with some footage.

“I was incredibly moved, because there is a power in this story and there is something very universal that gets told in this,” said Howard. “It’s a story about what it takes to find your family, and what a family can be when perhaps you’ve lost your own.”

Howard plays a forest ranger named Grace, who encounters the orphan Pete (Oakes Fegley) living wild in the woods. To her surprise, he’s not alone.

It’s really different this story. It still has the essence of what was so great about the original Pete’s Dragon. This is a story of an orphaned boy whose best friend is what everyone thinks is an imaginary character, and it’s actually a real dragon. And during the course of his journey he finds his family. So that’s still intact. But everything else is very different. Everything else.

When pressed on details, if the song “Candle on the Water” is part of the remake, Howard told fans “no…”

“I don’t think we could do it any better. Honestly. This is not a musical, although Wes [Bentley] and I tried really hard to work in some music here and there. There’s a few humming moments. But no, this is a partially animated film, of course, because of the dragon. But it’s very different from the original in that way.”

This version of Elliott, the dragon, will be “huge, green, furry and friendly,” says Howard. “He’s like a puppy dog. Just really sweet. I just want a pet dragon so badly.”

No big reveal in the footage, mostly just dialogue, which included star Robert Redford, who plays Grace’s father.”

Directed by David Lowery, the film also stars Karl Urban, Oona Laurence, Isaiah Whitlock, Craig Hall and Tim Wong.

Pete’s Dragon arrives in theaters on August 12, 2016.
