Peter Parker daydreams in SDCC crowd pleasing footage from ‘Spider-Man Homecoming’

SDCC gave fans a first look at many upcoming films and a short preview of the new Spidey film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, was met with explosive applause.

Spiderman1967 title cardTom Holland reprises his version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man introduced in Captain America: Civil War and director Jon Watts described Homecoming as a “straight up high school movie” about a 15-year-old kid, calling it the “ground level of the Marvel universe,” a major departure from the tone of Guardians of the Galaxy or even The Avengers.

“Every story, every hero, has a beginning,” reads the screen as we cut to a high school yearbook filled with images of our Marvel heroes as teens, which appear to be their real life counterparts’ actual yearbook pics. The scene inside the school previews an upcoming dance and then cuts to Peter’s day, reliving the events of Civil War, knowing the answer to a question despite his escape, a funny gag for “Web Design” and gym.

Peter attempts to break out of Study Hall, saying “I gotta go,” presumably rushing off for some Spidey action, when Zendaya’s character asks “What are you hiding, Peter?”

The sets up a montage of Spider-Man action before cutting back and she concedes: “Just kidding,” she says, “get out of here.” The are few more gags and then the big reveal: Vulture swooping down.

Holland explained the tone revealed in the flashbacks to Civil War: “…it’s like when you go on holiday and you come home, back to school and you’re like ‘Wow, I wish I was on holiday again.’ And that’s all I can say without ruining anything.”

Holland also told io9 that the trailer screened achieved exactly what he and Watts were going for with the movie.

“I remember sitting down with Jon, a year ago, and saying ‘What do you want to make?’” Holland said. “And he told me he wants to make a movie that’s real. About a real high school student and what would he do if he got superpowers? And that’s exactly what we’ve been doing. And I think that trailer really demonstrates Jon’s vision and what it is he wants to create and I behind it 100%.”

Vulture will be played by Birdman star Michael Keaton, who took to the latest issue of Empire to express his thoughts on the way superhero movies have taken over the box office.

“It’s extraordinary. You’re talking to a guy who basically knows nothing about the lore of that world. But my friend has two girls who are fascinated by superheroes. One in particular is way into them. I’m not kidding. I asked her about Spider-Man and she told me the movies I need to watch.”

Keaton’s Batman is a fan favorite, so the actor was asked if he was ever reluctant to return to the genre,

“Not really. I think it’s going to be cool and I’m really looking forward to it. Tom Holland is a wonderful actor and, I’ve got to say, from the early conversations I’ve had with Marvel, they’re really serious about how they approach their stuff. ”

In addition to Holland, Keaton and Zendaya, the new film will see the return of Marisa Tomei as Peter’s Aunt May, Robert Downey Jr., making a cameo with Logan Marshall-Green playing the Tinkerer.

Spider-Man Homecoming is currently filming. It’s scheduled for release July 7, 2017.
