‘Pastrix’ book review: Nadia Bolz-Weber’s bold, brash spiritual journey

Books dealing with faith, religion, God and Christianity don’t usually start with a curse word but author Nadia Bolz-Weber is unconventional in many ways in her book Pastrix.

Nadia’s bold and brash narrative begins with an open testimony of her sobriety and reconciliation with Jesus Christ and states that “….everything is marinated in irony and sarcasm until ready to be grilled and handed to a naked emperor” as an early introduction to her approach in sharing her message.

Pastrix book cover by author Nadia Bolz WeberPastrix paints a world contrasting the stereotypical, stuffy Evangelical church.  Nadia talks of rock and roll, baptism from a man wearing denim, and yes, her language may carry a bite that may cause many Christians to recoil.

Ripe from the preaching “Live hard and die with a smile on your face” Bolz-Weber openly professes the influence of the Sid and Nancy generation as she opens up about the pain caused by “Christians” and the”word of God”

If we want to understand why Christians called hypocrites and keep so many sinners from darkening a church door, then heed the tales from Pastrix and the tattooed author on the cover.

Nadia’s story is from the liberal division the Lutheran church, separate from conservative Christian. He journey chronicles a church accepting gay pastors,  pressuring for social justice like liberal politicians and supporting the “coexist movement.

Nadia criticizes by taking “a couple of potshots” at the evangelicals while becoming a voice of liberal church alienating those who take the Bible literally and call for purity in the church as a gateway to heaven (e.g. the Pirate Christian)

While both sides point their finger and never seen three fingers pointing back at themselves, Nadia in Pastrix by reveals reconciliation and partnership in stark contrast to just boycotting the opposing voice.

Nothing is more commendable in the honesty and transparency in Pastrix and she should be proud to chronicle a passionate, honest and transparent journey in her faith.

Overall Pastrix receives 2 1/2 stars out of 5
