Pakistan reports ‘dramatic expansion’ of polio since August

Over the past four months in the polio endemic country of Pakistan, they have seen a “dramatic expansion” of the serious viral disease, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

Pakistan map CIAThe GPEI reports that since August, Pakistan has seen 45 cases of wild poliovirus (WPV-1), with evidence of widespread geographic transmission across the country. This is considered the “high season” for polio in Pakistan.

This number compares with the first seven months of 2013 when they onjly reported 25 polio cases.

The GPEI notes “The situation in Pakistan is increasingly worrying to the global eradication effort, especially in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) which remains the main transmission zone in Pakistan. This area is also affected by an outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2). The risk of spread within the country and internationally is high.”

Pakistan has reported 70 wild poliovirus-1 cases so far in 2013. In all of 2012, they reported 58 total cases.

Neighboring country and polio endemic country, Afghanistan reported two new WPV1 cases during the past week. The total number of WPV cases for 2013 is now 11.

The third of the remaining polio endemic countries, Nigeria, did not report any new cases, with the 2013 total remaining at 50.

The GPEI says the “high season” for polio in Nigeria is on the decline.
