Pakistan: Asia Bibi case delayed for fifth time, court seeks to pardon TV staff

The Christian woman in Pakistan accused of blasphemy, sentenced to death, has had her appeal hearing delayed for a fifth time.

Asia BibiPakistan Christian Post reports Wednesday that Bibi’s appeal hearing “will not be brought before Division Bench of Lahore High Court until Pardon to Mir Shakeel Ur Rehman, Dr. Shaishta Lodhi, Vena Malik, Asad Khatak and other staff of Geo TV Chanel who are facing over a dozen cases of blasphemy in different Police Stations of Pakistan on committing blasphemy against family members of Holy Prophet Mohammad in a show which was watched by millions.”

In other words, this case is of high priority and Asia Bibi has been in jail for years and can wait. The Post article goes a step further, implying the delay was intentional “Pakistan Government and Government of Punjab is pressuring Attorney General of LHC not put forward appeal hearing of Asia Bibi.”

Moreover, the sources say “if Lahore High Court upholds sentence of Asia Bibi then Pardon for Mir Shakeel and other Geo TV staff will be difficult, so, Asia Bibi case hearing will not be held before Pardon to these Muslim media person.” (Emphasis added, The Dispatch)

Bibi has five children and has been imprisoned for over four years, awaiting an appeal hearing to her sentence of “death by hanging” for blasphemy against Islam’s prophet.
