PAHO chikungunya update includes two imported cases in Cuba
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) released their weekly “Chikungunya in the Americas, autochthonous” report for epidemiologic week 23 yesterday and it shows that the number of cases increased in this area of the world by some 28,000 cases compared to last week.
The reported total is now 135,427 confirmed and suspected cases in 17 countries in the Latin and non-Latin Caribbean.
The PAHO is reporting nearly 53,000 chikungunya cases in the Dominican Republic; however, they are reporting less than 12,000 cases in neighboring Haiti. Some experts and people on the ground say this number is way too low.
The PAHO has now added a section for imported cases in the Americas, which reveals that Cuba has reported two imported cases to date. Other countries included in the imported chart include Panama, Chile and the United States, which has reported 28 cases as of Monday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
