Over 30 Mexican evangelicals escape after being captured, tortured in religious battle over festivals

Thirty-three Mexican “evangelicals” are just grateful to be alive after being captured and tortured by Catholic villagers in Chiapas, Mexico.

Voice of the Martyrs Mexico reported the evangelicals were attempting to return to their homes near San Cristobal after three and a half years of forced exile.

Pastor Armando Mendez said he and others were hung by a rope and doused with gasoline. They barely escaped with their lives, with five having to be hospitalized.

Pastor Esdras Alonso was also captured.

Alonso has been battling for freedom in the region for years. The caciques and other “traditionalist Catholics,” who practice a mixture of indigenous ritual and Roman Catholicism, called for the Christians to pay for religious festivals plus fines for refusing to contribute in the past.

The evangelicals’ refusal to help pay for and participate in the festivals, which include drunken revelry and what they regard as idolatrous adoration of saints, was the reason the town officials voted to expel them in 2006 and 2007.

The captives were released Wednesday after a state government commission paid a “fine” of 600,000 pesos ($49,000).

Leftists and traditionalists have joined to force thousands of evangelicals from those homes over the last few decades.

Here’s a detailed account back in 2007 of some of those struggles involving Pastor Alonso.
