Omaha police identified dead body in Elmwood Park swimming pool as Calvin Minor, students raise safety concerns
Omaha police in Nebraska have identified a man who’s body was found north of Elmwood Park Thursday afternoon as Calvin Minor.
Minor, 52, was found in a ravine just north of the Elmwood Park swimming pool.
A University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) student alerted campus police just before 4 p.m. that there might have been an injured person in the ravine. Omaha police officer Phil Anson says police arrived and found the body.
Anson was not able to say whether police suspect foul play.
“When they got down to where that party was located it was determined that it was going to be an unknown death investigation,” Lt. Amy Otter said.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Omaha Crime Stoppers at 402 444-STOP.
The Gateway covered the news immediately, but questioned the lack of official notice to students broadly: “As word of the incident spread via social media, students raised the concern: why weren’t they informed of the situation by UNO Public Safety?”
They continued: “UNO Public Safety is required by the Federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) to keep and disclose information about crime on, and near campus, including timely warnings of crimes that may represent a serious or ongoing threat to the safety of students or employees.
“Assistant Director of Public Safety Mike Murphy said via email that Public Safety didn’t release a timely warning because the incident did not pose any danger to students, staff or faculty.”
