Olympic medalist, Dara Torres talks meningococcal meningitis and the ‘Voices of Meningitis’
With school back in session, there is so much to do and prepare for–books, exams, and weekend football games. However, there is something that all parents should be aware of as you send you children off the college or high school–Are their vaccinations up-to-date, including the one that provides protection against the very serious bacterial disease, meningococcal meningitis?
On the Saturday morning radio talk show, Dispatch Radio, I had the opportunity to talk to 12-time Olympic medalist, mother and new spokesperson for the awareness organization, Voices of Meningitis, Dara Torres, about the new initiative, Get in the Game.
During the interview, Dara explained about her involvement with Voices of Meningitis, what is meningococcal meningitis, the importance of children getting vaccinated against this disease, what parents can do, the vaccination schedule and other hygienic practices to take to help avoid this infection.
Voices of Meningitis is a US collaborative educational initiative of Sanofi Pasteur and the National Association of School Nurses to educate parents about meningococcal disease.

In addition to supporting vaccination & preventing meningitis, the MFA provides information to educate the public & medical professionals so that the early diagnosis, treatment &, most important, prevention of meningitis, will save lives. Meningitis is a dangerous & often times fatal inflammation of the brain &/or spinal cord that can leave survivors with serious life-long physical problems MFA would like to be considered as a news resource for the disease.
