NY Professor Ruth O’Brien says ‘too much force’ used in killing of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Boston bomber

City University of New York Professor Ruth O’Brien complains in an op-ed that “too much force” had been used against Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by the police.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev

Tamerlan Tsarnaev

“Now we have captured the two terrorists from Chechnya who come from the troubled region that is Muslim, but we cannot understand their motives, not yet,” she writes in her article “Day of Terror.”

“This said, the mortuary pictures of the older brother of the two are extremely disturbing, raising questions as to whether the Boston Police Department captured him with too much force… A picture is worth a thousand words that will keep our ears ringing as we recoil from this photo.  Images have a way of searing themselves into our memory in a way that can’t be undone.  We have an emotional memory, not just a rational one that is exemplified by words.”

The photo in question, see it here, was posted with some questions about here statement.

An obvious supporter of the President, she praises her reluctance to judge the pair of “terrorists.”

  1. CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON says:

    Professor Ruth O’Brien IS CORRECT.

YESTERDAY, I SAW THE PRE-AUTOPSY PHOTOGRAPH OF Tamerlan Tsarnaev. THE PUBLISHER OF THE PHOTOGRAPH WAS TRYING TO EXPLAIN THE LARGE LACERATION ON Mr. Tsarnaev’s LEFT SIDE AND THE SEEMING BURN MARKS ON HIS FACE. ACCORDING TO THAT WEBSITE, IT IS BELIEVED Mr. Tsarnaev WAS “WIRED” WITH AN EXPLOSIVE. BUT, ACCORDING TO TV-MEDIA REPORTS THERE WAS A “SHOOT-OUT;” AND IT COULD NOT BE DETERMINED IF THE BROTHERS HAD EXPLOSIVES.

NONETHELESS, THIS PRE-AUTOPSY PHOTOGRAPH MAKES THE “G-MEN” LOOK LIKE, “TRIGGER-HAPPY” LIARS.

  2. D. Long says:

Professor, I would like to ask you a few questions.
First, what do you really know about” use of force” other than what you have learned in college from a book?
Second, I understand your an intellectual genius but what have you done to contribute to society outside of a college classroom?
Third, have you ever saved a life? Have you ever witnessed someone being killed by a violent crime in person?
Also, I understand at your intellectual stage you probably think your an expert on every matter of life. I challenge you to explain what gives you the entitlement of being a subject matter expert on use if force. Please do not tell me your an expert on anything because you have read books about it, I assure you, YOUR NOT!!! College is only a small part of Professional and Life experience.
    Rebuttle…
Yes, I did graduate from a university and I do believe college is an essential part of life.
    I await your response.

      “D. Long,”

I DO NOT LIKE YOUR ATTACK ON Professor Ruth O’Brien.

THIS WAS A CASE OF A DOMESTIC STAND-OFF AND SHOOTING BETWEEN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND A SUSPECT IN A NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS TYPE OF SITUATION IS OFTEN REPORTED ON EVENING-NEWS PROGRAMMING IN “inner-cities.” WHEN POLICE FINALLY “GET THEIR MAN,” HIS CORPSE MAY HAVE A “BULLET-HOLE” (OR, TWO), BUT IT LOOKS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE Mr. Tsarnaev’s corpse.

  3. ijomo762 says:

If someone, who is a murder/terror suspect, is utilizing deadly force (guns and explosives) against multiple officers in an effort to evade capture, then you can count on that person’s actions being met with deadly force from law enforcement! There is no such thing as “too much force” when someone is trying to kill you! This was not a situation of an unarmed shoplifter trying to out run police!

    • CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON says:

      “Ijomo762,”

YOU ARE CORRECT – THIS WAS NOT, ” … an unarmed shoplifter trying to out run police … ;” BUT, IT WAS MOST DEFINITELY, POLITICAL THEATRE. THIS STORY HAD “WALL-TO-WALL” COVERAGE FOR MORE THAN TWENTY-FOUR HOURS. BECAUSE OF EVENTS LIKE, 11 SEPTEMBER 2001, LAW ENFORCEMENT NEEDED TO SHOW THE PUBLIC THAT AMERICA “does not ‘PLAY’ when someone ‘MESSES’ with us!”

  4. Bob says:

OK…Let’s put Ruth at one end of a street, Tamerlan at the other end, strapped with a bomb running toward her. Now I’m a Police officer with a gun. I’ll ask politely, Ms Ruth how much force should I use on this guy that just blew the hell out of a lot of innocent people? Wonder what this over intelligent idiots response would be…I bet I know.

  5. M White says:

Should there be a similar event, I suggest that Ruth go to the front lines!

  6. 1689 says:

“I recoiled after seeing the picture.”

An 8 year old boy is murdered. His sister is mangled. Mother brain damaged forever. Two others murdered. Dozens of amputations. And you think the cops used too much force? You’re an old irrelevant know-nothing hag Ruth. Sometimes, on rare occasions, violence is the answer–the only moral, just response. Me, instead of pictures in the morgue, I’d rather see the brothers’ heads on pikes at the Victory Mosque in New York. And I would rejoice at the cops’ success.

  7. C'mon Ruth says:

Is Ruth taking into account that his brother backed over Tamerlan’s body with a car for the appearance of his corpse?

Also is there a ceiling of “force” cops are supposed to use when they’re being fired on by moving SUV that’s hurling grenades, homemade bombs, and firing automatic weapons in a suburban neighborhood?

    • CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HORTON says:

      “C’mon Ruth,”

      YOU MISSED THE POINT.

THE ISSUE IS NOT, “Who did what to Mr. Tsarnaev’s body … ;” THE ISSUE IS PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT “OVER-ZEALOUS COPS” WHO LOVE TO PLAY “BANG-BANG SHOOT ‘EM UP!”

SINCE 11 SEPTEMBER 2001, AMERICANS HAVE HAD TO CONSTANTLY LISTEN ABOUT THIS “war on terror.” BUT, THE GOVERNMENT’S EVIDENCE ON “Who did what” IS LOUSY! … PERIOD! [I will ALWAYS believe Osama bin Laden was INNOCENT and murdered because of American “bait-and-switch”].
