Nursing Home Neglect: The Mask of Compassion

Attorneys know that nursing home neglect takes place more often than nursing home administrators care to admit. Put a loved one in a nursing home, and the first thought that inevitably comes to mind is whether it is the right or wrong decision. While it is admirable to take care of an aging father, mother or spouse at home, the burden is often overwhelming.

The False Disguise of Compassion

Many people place their relatives in nursing homes thinking that their loved ones will receive excellent medical care, plenty of activities, fantastic meals, lots of attention and, most of all, compassion. But, people may not realize that compassion is not always real. Wearing a mask of compassion, the caregiver may pretend to care for a patient.

However, the true motive of the caregiver toward the patient is not always pure. The caregiver may simply want to make sure that the person is out of the way because the nursing home staff is inadequate and cannot give each patient the attention he or she deserves.

The Nursing Home Administrator Goes Against The Doctor’s Orders

Lawyers study any unusual circumstances indicating nursing home neglect. For instance, an elderly person who is still living at home may experience an unfortunate fall that causes a hip bone fracture. The first step is to operate on the hip bone. Then, the patient needs physical therapy, which often takes place in a nursing home. Looking at the patient through a mask of compassion, the nursing home administrator decides that the patient belongs in a wheelchair even though the hospital surgeon recommends a comprehensive physical therapy program.

When a doctor refers the patient to a physical therapist, the therapist is supposed to ensure that the patient performs various forms of exercise. Walking and other forms of exercises are part of the recovery process. It is time to ring an alarm bell when the nursing home administrator devises a program that opposes the physician’s orders.

Placing a patient who is supposed to receive physical therapy in a wheelchair is viewing the person through a compassionate mask that belies the truth. The fact is that the nursing home is practicing neglect, and Albany Oregon attorneys understand that nursing home neglect is against the law.

Taking the time to do the research on a good legal firm can save you a lot of time and money. Take a look at Nelson MacNeil Rayfield, specialized as Corvallis personal Injury lawyers legal, the attorneys review every medical record. The next step is to get a second opinion from an impartial doctor as to whether the patient suffered from neglect. The patient who ends up in a wheelchair instead of on his or her own two feet is in danger of becoming weak and even seriously ill.

The surgeon sighs in dismay because the patient is not following post-operative instructions. The hip bone surgery was a total waste of time because the patient is not performing any type of exercise. The patient’s spouse or next-of-kin innocently accepts whatever the nursing home’s physical therapist advises.

The nursing home staff physician may tell the patient’s relative that the unfortunate patient has a heart condition, which may or may not bear any resemblance to the truth, and that the person’s heart is very weak. The therapist convinces the patient’s relative that staying in a wheel chair is the best option because too much exercise will weaken the person’s heart.

In fact, the patient coincidentally had a major bypass surgery operation during the past few years, and the person’s heart is now very strong. Once the concerned relative finally realizes that the nursing home staff is neglecting the loved one, it is time to sign for the patient’s immediate release before the person’s life comes to a fatal end. Once the mask of compassion rears its ugly head in a nursing home, it is time to contact Albany Oregon attorneys right away.
