North Carolina: Teacher punishes student for calling her ‘maam’, she verbally abused the boy

A North Carolina boy is making headlines for being punished by his fifth-grade teacher for calling her “ma’am,” leaving his mother in disbelief and shocking people all over the country.

Teretha Wilson picked up her son from the bus stop last week, she says she noticed something was wrong. “I asked him what was wrong, and he told me he got in trouble for saying ‘ma’am’ to a teacher,” Wilson told Fox News. “I was confused.”

The boy, 10, who goes to North East Carolina Preparatory School in Tarboro, North Carolina, showed his mother a piece of lined paper where he wrote the word “ma’am” repeatedly as a form of punishment.

The boy was reportedly required to have his mother sign the paper and return it to the teacher.

“He was disappointed because he felt like he had done something wrong,” said Wilson.

Wilson says that the next day she and her son Tamarion brought the “ma’am” paper as well as another sheet that included the written definition of the word ma’am to a meeting with the teacher and principal. Check out her post at the bottom.

Wilson says the teacher said it “was getting on her nerve when he called her ma’am” but “couldn’t give me a reason of why that was bad.” The young boy also says the teacher threatened to throw something at him, but according to Wilson, the teacher says Tamarion knew she was not serious.

The school released a statement to ABC 11 stating “this is a personal matter which has been handled appropriately by the k-7 principal.”

Wilson reportedly plans to go to the school board about the matter.

Facebook what is the definition of ma’am? My child was punished for addressing his teacher as ma’am. Mrs.Williams 5th grade teacher of North East Carolina Preparatory School made my child do write offs MA’AM and told him if she had some to throw she would because he kept calling her ma’am
We had a meeting today with her and the principal for her to say she will not answer him if she continue to call her ma’am and that she did say she would throw something at him. I can’t say what won’t said and have never seen anything like this before. With everything going on in the world when did it become a issue for a child to respect their elders.
