‘Noah’ banned in Indonesia

The most populous Muslim country on the globe is the latest in a string of nations that have banned the blockbuster film about the Biblical figure.

The epic film, Noah, has already been banned Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates as being offensive to Muslim movie-goers.

The big screen adaptation of the Old Testament story of Noah’s Ark, stars Russell Crowe in the title role and was scheduled to be released in Indonesia on March 28. The picture opens in the US the same day.

noah-movie-poster“We don’t want a film that could provoke reactions and controversies,” said Film Censorship Board member Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi on Monday.

‘‘When you know that in the Koran Noah is a prophet, and you also know in the Islamic world you’re not supposed to render any artworks or images of a prophet … you know certain countries are going to be banning this film when it comes out, so you understand that, star Russell Crowe said.

“I’ve been amazed at the gall at some of these commentators to make these ridiculous assumptions about something they haven’t even seen.’’

Although it’s not banned in Egypt, earlier this month, Egypt’s Al-Azhar Institute in Cairo said the film should be banned because it is “irreligious”.

“Depicting prophets opens the door for doubting the behavior of prophets … Actors cannot accurately mimic the behaviors, manners and appearances of prophets,” Salifi member Abdel Hameed added.

Others in Egypt go a step further. Some scholars have called for “destroying” any movie theatre that displays the blasphemous film.

Aronofsky should be reassured Noah existed and his sons and their descendants be traced through Chronicles in the Bible and archaeology to people and places today. Holocaust survivors asked an artist to “Find Noah”, and in three internet days, he found all the grandchildren and where they lived. Why are the 7 Noahide laws, for Jews and Gentiles alike, still the basis for law on earth? Is that crucial knowledge part of the movie?

After all. Where did Noah Live? How did Noah Build the Ark? What Happened After?” (4 min video) . I’m sure this depiction is quite accurate logical and wise. And it is open source to the public.

And please experience…. , a four part interactive essay where Noah’s descendants are traced through architecture, art history and the 3 style of hats they wore , the meteor that struck earth in 3123 bce and “messed things up” and more.
