Nigeria: Muslim Fulani militants murder 32 in new attack
(International Christian Concern) –On Tuesday, February 26, 32 Christians were killed in Southern Kaduna, Nigeria. The attack is believed to have been conducted by Fulani militants as stated by multiple other news sources. This attack may have been a reprisal for a previous attack that was reported by the state governor, in which several Fulani communities were attacked. That attack was also reportedly a reprisal for an attack on the Adara community in Kaduna.
These attacks highlight two large issues with the situation in Nigeria currently. First, the governor of Kaduna, El-Rufai, is believed to be either complicit or biased towards the Fulani people. This has been seen in the past when he has paid Fulani militants off to stop attacks, without arresting anyone or preventing attacks after. This shows either laziness and incompetence, or complicity. Also during this latest set of incidents, the governor personally made comments about the reported attacks on the Fulani communities, but never addressed either set of attacks on the Christian communities. This has led to the distrust of the Christians of Kaduna.
The second large issue, is that the government is showing a complete inability to stop these attacks from taking place. Within a two-week span, three reported attacks killed nearly 200 people. Despite this, neither the government of Kaduna or the Federal Government of Nigeria has been able to stop the string of attacks. This is common throughout the Middle Belt of Nigeria. The government allowed nearly 2,000 people to be killed last year in attacks without any real attempts to stop the violence.
Kaduna is one of the worst hit states that has been dealing with these attacks. It is also one of the 12 states in Nigeria that has Sharia Law as its guiding doctrine, despite this being against the Nigerian Constitution.
