Nicholas Hoplins, Travis Thompson identified in UPIKE murder suicide

Kentucky police are still actively investigating a murder suicide involving a UPIKE student.

Nicholas D. Hopkins, 36, of Florence KY and Travis L. Thompson, 22, of Independence KY were identified by authorities as the two men found dead from gunshot wounds. Both were dead by the time first responders arrived on scene.

The Pikeville, Ky. Police are conducting the death investigation. Pikeville Public Safety Director Paul Maynard said in a release that two men died from gunshot wounds and that the bodies were found Thursday night.

The Pike County Coroner confirmed to WYMT on Friday that at least one of the men who died was a UPIKE student.


Police are still investigating as no motive has been determined at this point.

The apartments were the two bodies were found are used to house students at the University of Pikeville’s School of Osteopathic Medicine.
