NHS Lanarkshire investigate measles outbreak in local schoolchildren

NHS Lanarkshire health officials are responding to an outbreak of measles among nine children and young people in Larkhall and Newmains in the Scottish county, according to a NHS Lanarkshire news release Nov. 22.

Although the children contracted the viral disease in their own communities, health officials are concerned it could spread to the various schools they attended.

Letters were sent to the parents of pupils at Newmains Nursery Centre, Morningside Primary in Newmains and Larkhall Academy, to inform them of the situation and offer health advice and MMR vaccine for some children and young people.

Over 94% of children attending these schools have had at least one dose of the MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) vaccine – a statistic Dr David Cromie says is “encouraging”.

“However, we are recommending that all children should have at least one dose of MMR and those who are over three years-four months of age should have two doses of MMR vaccine. Those who would benefit from MMR vaccine are being offered the jab by public health nurses”, said Cromie.

Measles or rubeola, is an acute highly communicable viral disease that is characterized by Koplik spots in the cheek or tongue very early in the disease. A couple of days later a red blotchy rash appears first on the face, and then spreads, lasting 4-7 days. Other symptoms include fever, cough and red watery eyes. The patient may be contagious from four days prior to the rash appearance to four days after rash appearance.

The disease is more severe in infants and adults. Complications from measles which is reported in up to 20% of people infected include; seizures, pneumonia, deafness and encephalitis.

Prevention of measles is through vaccination.
