Newt Gingrich compares Trump to Reagan, says Kasich is ‘not establishment’
In the wake of Tuesday’s primaries, former Speaker of the House and GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich spoke with radio host Laura Ingraham about the election results, Donald Trump’s big win in Florida and how Ted Cruz and Trump will battle it out for the GOP nomination.
Gingrich was recounting the different candidates’ speeches, Cruz’s “state of shock” before turning to praise Trump, the GOP frontrunner’s response to negative ads, contrasting Trump with Cruz and Hillary Clinton.
“He was almost Reagan-like in being a cheerful happy warrior, who is telling stories about himself,” Gingrich says. This sound bite is around the 10:30 mark in the podcast segment below.
Ingraham then took the conversation towards John Kasich and how Trump needs to reach out to the establishment through inclusion, but how that can be seen negatively by Trump supporters.
Gingrich gives a long analysis, beginning around 11:20, saying “he should be open to working with the establishment” on the pick, the VP nomination. He discusses how Trump could include Cruz, Utah’s Mike Lee and others into a Trump plan before addressing Kasich.
“Kasich’s not really establishment. Kasich has never been that accepted by the old order,” he says at the 12:30 mark in the audio. “Establishment would be to reach out the Jeb Bush….”

They dance around whether Newt is establishment.
“I love him,” Gingrich said of Kasich earlier this month, adding that he was like a little brother. Gingrich continues to repeat himself: “Trump’s a phenomenon. He’s unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetime.”
