New Survey: 42% Americans believe Creationism, over 70% believe God is involved

Readers may have to look past the evolution graphics, like the one used by the Huffington Post showing a chimp evolving into a human, to get the results of a new Gallup Poll: nearly three-quarters of Americans believe God was involved in the creation of humnas with 42% supporting the traditional Bible account.

Nearly half of Americans not only hold that God created humanity, but it occurred a “mere 10,000 years ago,” according to a Gallup poll from May 2014. The mere was the description in the aforementioned HuffPo coverage.

So here’s the question:

Which of the following statements comes closest to your views on the development and origin of human beings?
1) Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process.
2) Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process.
3) God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so.

The percentage of Americans who believe that God created humans 10,000 years ago has only decreased by 2 percentage points since 1982. The belief in God’s guidance dropped 38% in 1982 to 31% in 2014, while the figures rose from 9% to 19% for people who don’t believe that God had anything to do with the process at all.

In fact, the number of Americans believing literal Biblical creation has not changed at all. The rise in a “God Less” creation, which has been steady since 2002. correlates to a “pretty” steady drops in those who believe was involved but not in 10,000 years.

Gallup notes that “Historically, Americans’ views on the origin of humans have been related to their religiousness, education, and age.
  • Religiousness relates most strongly to these views, which is not surprising, given that this question deals directly with God’s role in human origins. The percentage of Americans who accept the creationist viewpoint ranges from 69% among those who attend religious services weekly to 23% among those who seldom or never attend.
  • Educational attainment is also related to these attitudes, with belief in the creationist perspective dropping from 57% among Americans with no more than a high school education to less than half that (27%) among those with a college degree. Those with college degrees are, accordingly, much more likely to choose one of the two evolutionary explanations.
  • Younger Americans — who are typically less religious than their elders — are less likely to choose the creationist perspective than are older Americans. Americans aged 65 and older — the most religious of any age group — are most likely to choose the creationist perspective.
The Huff Po graphic on this data was better presented than the analysis from Gallup – see that graph below.

Their article also reminded readers that scientists have a consensus that evolution is the means of humanity’s existence. Creation.com posted a list of “some” of the outed scientists who believe in Creationism – that list is HERE
