New ‘Spider-Man’ film like John Hughes high school drama film, promises new villains
Spider-Man is headed to the Civil War and then will star in his own film and fans are eager to learn more about the new version starring Tom Holland (The Impossible)
At the recent press day for Ant-Man, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige spoke to Birth.Movies.Death. about what fans can expect in a new Spidey film.
“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” said Feige. “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”
More teen drama for Peter Parker and company.
“Particularly at that age, in high school, everything feels like life or death. The tests feel like life or death,” says Feige. “Coming home from being out with your friends seemed like life or death.Feige went on to explain that the film will not only have the standard life-and-death stakes that come from a superhero fighting a supervillain, but those that come from the personal drama of high school life.”
Director Jon Watts (Cop Car) may be delivering a very unique Spider-Man film, completely different than the previous five films. Peter Parker juggling high school with crime fighting has always been relegated to the backstory.
Feige’s last remark is perhaps the most exciting, who will be the villains in the new film.
“Right now we’re interested in seeing villains we haven’t seen before,” Feige revealed.
So, the previous films focused on Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, Venom, Lizard, Electro and the Rhino. Some early thoughts from fan sites mention Vulture, Mysterio, Kraven, Scorpion and Shocker.
Spider-Man was key to the Civil War story in the comic books, revealing his secret identity, joining the ranks with Iron Man, but ultimately switching to Captain America’s side and helping win the war.
Could Spider-Man show up on one of the Netflix shows: “My general answer to that is never say never,” Feige said. “But our current Sony deal is very specific – we’re producing the standalone film, with a certain amount of back and forth allowed.”
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016
