New ‘Risen’ trailer resonates with a ‘killer elevator pitch’

Joseph Fiennes takes center stage in Risen as a Roman soldier charged with searching for Jesus Christ’s missing body.

Promotion for the film has distanced itself from the faith-based film stereotypes and “preaching to the choir.”

From Slash Film: “There is nothing wrong with entertainment being specifically crafted for Christian audiences, but there is everything wrong with recent movies like God’s Not Dead and The War Room, which coddle their audiences by literally preaching to the choir and no one else…So we’ll say this much about Risen: if you remove it from the faith-based genre, it still has a killer elevator pitch.”

Harry Potter star Tom Felton co-stars with Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead) playing Jesus. Risen was directed by who is best known for helming Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld back in the ’90s. This will be his first feature since 2006.

Check out the trailer below.

The film also stars Stephan Hagan, Peter Firth, Maria Botto, Mish Boyko, Stewart Scudamore, Mark Killeen and Antonio Gil.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Risen is the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius (Joseph Fiennes), a powerful Roman Military Tribune, and his aide Lucius (Tom Felton), are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.

Risen opens on February 19, 2016.
