A #SaveMeriam campaign swept the international headlines as nation after nation called her release.

“Meriam was released just about an hour ago,” Mohanad Mustafa told AFP.

On Mother’s Day she was jailed, with her toddler son, while pregnant and ultimately gave birth in the Sudan jail. Meriam’s death sentence was suspended for two years so she could nurse newborn Maya.

“The appeal court ordered the release of Meriam Yahya and the cancellation of the (previous) court ruling,” Sudan’s SUNA news agency said.

Mr Mustafa said Ms Ibrahim had been sent “to an unknown house to stay at for her protection and security…Her family had been threatened before and we are worried that someone might try to harm her,” he said.

Ibrahim was convicted of apostasy and adultery under Sharia Law when she married Daniel Wani, a Christian, in 2011 and officially renounced her faith.  The sentence was 100 lashes for adultery and to hang for apostasy.

The ACLJ notes that “Meriam’s children – who are American citizens – were forced into prison with her, and she gave birth to her youngest while in chains for the Gospel.”

In response to her death sentence, the ACLJ launched an international effort to free Meriam and her children. Our petition for her release garnered over 380,000 signatures, and we delivered a letter directly to the Sudanese embassy demanding that Sudan comply with its own law and with international law and release Meriam.

We are thankful for her release, but our work is not done. It’s time to bring Meriam and her American children home to America. It’s time to grant her asylum so that she can worship and raise her children without fear, here in the land of liberty.

Join the ACLJ petition to the Obama Administration to grant Meriam and her children asylum and bring them to their new American home.
