The highly anticipated sequel is the next step in Marvel’s Phase 2 megaplan of films with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor returning to his old life after his adventures in The Avengers.

As well as returning to London to reconnect with his Earthbound love, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), he’s also got an army of dark elves to deal with, led by Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith. As the subtitle hints at, the sequel will spend more time exploring the nine realms of Asgard, with Thor whisking her off to meet his folks in his homeworld.

Fans can rest assured that Thor’s adopted brother Loki looks set to cause all manner of mischief.

Director Alan Taylor, who takes the reigns from Kenneth Branagh, has experience on Game Of Thrones, and should bring an earthier aesthetic to one of Marvel’s more fantastical settings.

Natalie Portman, Kat Jennings, Anthony Hopkins and Rene Russo join Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston from the first film.

Thor: The Dark World arrives in theaters November , 2013
