New ‘Pacific Rim’ photos take fans behind-the-scenes and reveal more concept art
New images from Guillermo del Toro’s summer blockbuster Pacific Rim arrived to show some behind-the-scenes images of del Toro himself along with cinematographer Guillermo Navarro.
Variety released the photos May 29, which include some concept art for both the Jaegers and their monstrous opponents, the Kaiju.
The official synopsis: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
While the film hasn’t even arrived in theaters, del Toro is already working on the sequel.
“Travis [Beacham, co-writer] and I have been working on it. We co-wrote the screenplay on this first one, and now we’re hard at work at doing the second one. We want to take however long it takes to really find out the idea and try to bridge something that really makes the mythology roll. And in the meantime, I’m going to shoot Crimson Peak, which is a ghost story.”
The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman.
Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.
