New Jersey lawmakers organize to override Chris Christie’s gun control veto

While the New Jersey Governor and GOP Presidential candidate can tout a long record of vetoing bills, lawmakers are organizing for an override vote of Christie’s stance on a recent gun control measure.

Democratic and Republican lawmakers passed a bill in June that would make it more difficult for a person with a documented history of mental illness to buy a gun. State Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) said he will ask his Republican colleagues next week to support the legislation again by overriding the governor.

“If they reverse themselves, eventually they will have to look at themselves in the mirror and explain to people who they can back away from something they supported,” Sweeney said during a Statehouse press conference.

The bill (S2360) would require local, county and state law enforcement officers to be alerted when people with a history of mental illness asks a judge to expunge their record of psychiatric treatment so they may buy a firearm.

Judges do not get law enforcement input when they make these decisions, said Sen. Fred Madden, (D-Gloucester), one of the bill’s prime sponsors

“This is something the courts asked for, the law enforcement community wants and the public supports,”  said Madden, who once served as acting Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “This bill would improve the process already in place by providing the courts with relevant information when making important decisions on expungement cases that could impact public safety.”

Christie issued a “conditional” or partial veto of the measure and called upon the Legislature to enact changes he has recommended that would strengthen mental health treatment laws.

“I cannot endorse a continued path of patchwork proposals and fragmented statutes that add further confusion to an already cumbersome area of law,” according to the governor’s veto statement.

The override vote is scheduled for Sept. 24, Sweeney said.

During the GOP debate on CNN, Christie touted his record of conservative leadership in Jersey, the “countless vetoes” on his record: “What folks want in this country is someone to go down there (Washington) and get the job done.”
