Neil Gaiman confirms ‘Sandman’ film, why not on DC list, ‘Justice League Dark’ rumors
For non-comic book fans it may be difficult to understand how DC Comics and Vertigo are separate. With the new DC film projects announced, a glaring omission was Sandman with Looper star Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached.
Sandman creator, Neil Gaiman, doesn’t shy away from questions so a fan took to Tumblr to ask: “Despite talk last month about the script being worked on, ‘Sandman’ wasn’t mentioned by name in today’s WB news release of scheduled DC Comics films. There are previously mentioned release dates without film titles attached, so it’s not clear if the status of the project has been altered or if the team at WB decided to focus their news on the easier to group together capes & tights titles due out. Has their been a change in the production timeline? Is ‘Sandman’ going to be marketed differently?”
Gaiman gave a very direct response regarding the status of Sandman: “It’s not a DC Comics film. It’s a Vertigo film. That’s a different slate of films, and a different announcement.”
That was very exciting news for fans eager to see this and other comic books made into film.
While Gordon-Levitt was promoting Sin City: A Dame to Kill For he confirmed that the Sandman project was never in danger of being scrapped altogether. That said, this update will be comforting for fans of the graphic novel who may have feared the worst when DC fans were celebrating.
More importantly in Gaiman’s post is that the Vertigo brand will apparently contain its own slate of films, which hints that director Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark film ambitions may not be dead. This news would seem to indicate that like Sandman, Justice League Dark might still be on.
Several members of that team, including John Constantine, Madame Xanadau, and Swamp Thing, all had their own publications under the Vertigo banner, so if there really is a “slate” of these types of films coming soon, that would be the place to put Justice League Dark.
Since del Toro has recently discussed the project like it’s still on the table, it’s very conceivable to think that this is the studio’s plan right for it now.
