Napa 6.0 earthquake injures hundreds, damages buildings

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake rocked wine country north of San Francisco early on Sunday, injuring more than 200 people, damaging historic buildings, setting some homes on fire and causing power outages around the town of Napa.

This earthquake was the strongest in 25 years, rocking residents around 3:20 a.m. local time, with an epicenter 6 miles (10 km) south of the city of Napa, which is located about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco.

No deaths have been reported, but according to the San Jose Mercury News over twelve people were treated for serious injuries, with one teen “critically injured by a collapsing chimney, and was taken to a trauma center at a children’s hospital” noting Napa authorities.

Six fires broke out, including one that consumed six mobile homes,  local fire battalion chief John Callahan  said. Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa said it had treated 120 patients injured in the quake, which was strong enough to be felt throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency, putting all state resources at the disposal of his Office of Emergency Services.

The last time an earthquake of this size hit the Bay Area was in 1989, when the Loma Prieta quake at magnitude 6.9 caused billions of dollars in damage and was responsible for 63 deaths and 3,757 injuries in the affected areas.

The largest quake on record for the Bay Area was the historic 7.8 earthquake that hit San Francisco in 1906.

Aftershocks will continue for “several weeks,” but State Geologist John Parrish told Mercury News, “it’s unlikely there will be a large earthquake (in the near future).” Already, up to 60 aftershocks, with 3.6 magnitude shaker being the largest, have been recorded, he said. At least seven geologists were doing surveys in affected areas, he said.
