At least 36 cases have been recorded by local health officials, said Sakoba Keita, the doctor in charge of the prevention of epidemics in Guinea’s Health Ministry, Reuters reports.

“Symptoms appear as diarrhea and vomiting, with a very high fever. Some cases showed relatively heavy bleeding,” Keita said.

“The administrative district of Gueckedou is the worst affected, with 13 deaths for 19 cases,” Dr. Keita added.

A team of health investigators will be going village to village to try a determine the cause of the mystery illness.

At the moment we cannot rule out Lassa or Ebola (the latter never being reported in the country before), notes Dr. Keita.

About 30 test samples have been sent to France for analysis, with results expected “within 48 hours”, the doctor said, adding that further samples are due to be examined at the Pasteur Institute in the Senegalese capital Dakar.
