Variety confirmed that Disney has hired Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can) has been tapped to pen the fifth installment of the property kept afloat by star Johnny Depp as Cap’n Jack Sparrow. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing as the successful franchise continues.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise has grossed more than $3.5 billion worldwide with the 2011 “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” grossing more than $1 billion worldwide.

Fans may be concerned to be reminded that Nathanson is also the writer on Speed 2: Cruise Control; Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3; Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Tower Heist.

Depp is set to earn nearly $100 million for the fifth film.

“Alice in Wonderland 2” is being developed

Depp has not signed on, according to the Variety report, but Disney is currently developing a sequel to “Alice in Wonderland,” and the actor has often said that as long as the material is good, he would be happy to return.

“Jurassic Park 4” coming in 2014

After years of talk about “Jurassic Park 4,” Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg have announced that they are moving forward with the new installment and will have it in theaters on June 13th, 2014.

Spielberg is on board only as a producer, but since he recently delayed “Robopocalypse” and doesn’t have anything else to direct, many believe that he may want to helm “Jurassic Park 4.”

He did, however, state several times that he would rather hire someone for the job.

The “Jurassic Park” trilogy has grossed almost $2 billion worldwide with “Jurassic Park 3” grossing $363 million. Universal is also planning a 3D re-release of the first movie, which will hit theaters on April 5th.
