Movie News: New ‘Gremlins’ ‘Goonies’ ‘Karate Kid’ and ‘Master of the Universe’ films move ahead

The 1980’s film appear to be all getting a dust off and consideration from studios. Some of the latest news includes a new Gremlins project, a long-awaited sequel to The Goonies, a second Karate Kid film starring Jaden Smith and a writer for a Masters of the Universe film.

goonies cast photoGoonies director Richard Donner was approached, or better described as cornered by TMZ, Donner dropped the news: “We’re doing a sequel” to the 1980′s classic film Goonies. When asked if any of the stars from the original movie would return for The Goonies 2, Donner responded “Hopefully all of them!”

Regarding a Gremlins remake,  Ain’t It Cool News indicates that it’s time for the project to come back under bright lights again. According to their sources, the Gremlins remake is “moving quickly” at Warner Bros.

Their article notes: “I was skeptical at first (Donner’s been talking up the sequel for years), but I did a little digging of my own and found that, yes, it’s very real and evidently on the fast track to production. Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus (who wrote the original) and Donner are producing, and they’re actively looking for writers and a director (no Donner this time). Plot details are sketchy at this stage, but it sounds like the plan is to focus primarily on the kids of the Goonies and work in cameos from the original cast.”

Kung Fu Panda screenwriters Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reif were tapped to pen a sequel to Karate Kid starring Jaden Smith and now Sony has hired Breck Eisner to be the Karate Kid sequel director.

Jackie Chan is also expected to return and, as Deadline notes, the first film was a great success: “Harald Zwart directed the 2010 original, which grossed $56 million on its opening weekend and ended with $343 million worldwide.”

The latest is news that Masters of the Universe may get a big budget adaptation to bring He-Man to life.

Sony and Escape Artists have hired Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow to re-write the film, and there is supposition that he could direct as well.

Goonies must start from the original cast growing up in Historia and becoming adults. Then have it where some of them have kids. Data son could be super techy. Then Mikey and Brans kids could have learned all kinds of cool new adventures from their grandfather. Since the first adventure started from his stuff from the museum.
