Movie News: ‘Cliffhanger’ reboot, MI5, ‘The Mummy’ loses director as ‘Insurgent’ begins filming

There are always reboots, remakes and sequels in development, so here’s some of the latest. Godzilla 2 and director Gareth Edwards also helming the first of the Star Wars spin-offs (likely a Boba Fett film) was already a huge story this week – more on that here.

Cliffhanger

StudioCanal and producer Neil Moritz are moving ahead with plans for a reboot of the 1993 film Cliffhanger. Deadline reports that “They’ve set Joe Gazzam to write the screenplay after he was among a group of screenwriters who pitched their take on a movie that still holds up as a guilty pleasure.”

Sylvester Stallone starred in the “original Cliffhanger revolved around a traumatized mountain climber forced back into an expedition after a plane crash leaves a lot of stolen cash and bad guys strewn on the Rocky Mountains.”

Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 5 secured director Christopher McQuarrie and a Christmas Day 2015 release date, but now the studio and star/producer Tom Cruise have tapped Will Staples to pen the script.

THR reported the news, adding that Staples “worked on Need for Speed: Rivals and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. He’s attached to several films in development, including Blood & Treasure, a starring and directing vehicle forBen Affleck set up at Warner Bros. He also wrote Myth for Fox and the Jeremy Renner vehicle King of Heists.”

The Mummy

According to The Wrap, Andres Muschietti has departed Universal’s reboot of The Mummy “over creative differences.” Director Len Wiseman, who exited the picture citing scheduling conflicts just before Muschietti joined, previously spoke about the tone of the new film, saying: “It’s horror. Its epic. It’s more of a modern day version of what would happen if we came across a mummy in our world today. It is pretty fascinating.”

The Mummy is set for April 22, 2016.

Divergent sequel, Insurgent begins filming

Director Robert Schwentke (Red) has only been on the project for a couple of months, but Insurgent now begins production.

“Lionsgate announced today that principal photography has commenced in Atlanta on the feature film adaptation of INSURGENT, the second installment of the blockbuster DIVERGENT action adventure franchise…” the press release states.

Insurgent arrives in theaters March 20, 2015. Check out the full press release HERE
