The Oklahoma man who converted to Islam and ultimately beheaded one former co-worker and stabbed another, had his mother come forth and make a statement.
Alton Nolen, 30, was fired from Vaughan Foods after trying to convert co-workers to Islam, returned and beheaded Colleen Hufford and stabbed Traci Johnson several times before being shot by the company’s COO Mark Vaughan.
“My heart is just so heavy right now. I know my son. My son was raised up in a loving home,” Joyce Nolen said. ”My son was raised up believing in God … my son was a good kid.”
Nolen is also being treated in a hospital and Johnson has survived the attack as well.
Workers at the plant had recently complained that Nolen was attempting to convert them to Islam. The FBI is now investigating the case, to determine is Nolen has connections to ISIS or if he acted on his own.
“That’s not my son. There’s two sides to every story and we’re only hearing one,” Joyce Nolen said. “His family — our hearts bleed right now, because what they saying Alton has done. I want to apologize to both families, because this is not Alton, but I just — I’m praying that justice will prevail.”
Megan Nolen, 27, claimed that her brother has never been violent and that he has “always been a peoples’ person.” She expressed being in disbelief and asked the public to pray for everyone involved.
Nolen was released from prison in March 2013 after serving two years of a six-year sentence on charges including assaulting a police officer.
Records show that Nolen has a tattoo of Jesus Christ on his chest and a tattoo of praying hands on his right arm, indicating that he could have previously been a Christian. Another tattoo on his abdomen says “As-Salaamu Ataikum,” which is an Arabic greeting by Muslims meaning “Peace be upon you.”
Vaughan, the man who shot Nolen, has been hailed as a hero. “This was not going to stop if he didn’t stop it,” said Moore Police Sergeant Jeremy Lewis said. “It could have gotten a lot worse.”

Nolen, who reportedly goes by the name Jah’Keem Yisrael on his Facebook page, will be charged with first-degree murder in Hufford‘s death.
