Missing New Jersey woman, Martha Hesse, found dead in Toms River

Police report that they are still investigating the dead of a missing New Jersey woman, Martha Hesse, who was found dead in Toms River.

Hesse, 79, was found by search crews in a wooded area within the Holiday City Senior Community. The found was found Saturday, around 10:45 a.m., by volunteer firefighters from the Toms River Fire Companies near the western end of Yorktown Boulevard. They were continuing search efforts that began Thursday when she was first reported missing by her husband.

Tom River police had issued a statement claiming that Hesse had been wearing a T-shirt and pajamas when she left her home on Mt. Fairweather Lane in the Holiday City development sometime before 6 p.m. Thursday evening. Hesse’s spouse told investigators Hesse had driven away in her car from their Mt. Fairweather Lane home to an unknown location.

Her car was found later that evening near the community lake, prompting the search which included watercraft and a State Police helicopter.

During the initial missing persons report, police noted: “She is described as 5-feet, 5-inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes…and might be ‘distraught’ and in need of help.”

Officers also found her purse, wallet, cash, financial cards and cell phone.

Police say there is no reason to believe that foul play was involved at this time.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.

Police are asking anyone who saw or interacted with Hesse on Thursday or Friday to call Detective Petrick at 732-349-1050 extension 1235 or email him at [email protected]
