Missing Columbia student Jiwon Lee identified as body found in Hudson River
The body of a woman found in the Hudson River has been identified as that of missing Columbia University student Jiwon Lee, police confirmed Sunday.
Lee, 29, a fourth-year dental student who was president of the school’s American Student Dental Association branch, was wearing a sweater, underwear and boots when her body was found floating in the Hudson Saturday. Authorities detailed the case, noting that she had last been seen on the evening of April 1, 2014.
The cause of her death had not yet been determined as of late Sunday night, police said. The Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
DNA Info reported Monday that Lee has left a suicide note, citing NYPD sources.
Lee had suffered from depression and attempted suicide before she disappeared. How she came to be in the river was still being investigated, according to sources speaking with The Global Dispatch.
Lee’s family and friends raised more than $87,000 in an online fundraising campaign to help pay for a private investigator to help search for her.
