Missing Chicago tourist, Sarath Kumar Potharaju, identfied as dead body in DC tidal basin
The man found dead Thursday floating in the tidal basin has been identified.
Sarath Kumar Potharaju, age 35, an Indian national living in Chicago who went missing on Easter Sunday while on vacation with family in D.C.
According to Ward 2 ANC Commissioner Kishan Putta, who hails from the same part of India as Potharaju and had been working with his family to find him since he disappeared, Potharaju’s family identified the body today.
Putta says that three of Potharaju’s uncles arrived in D.C. yesterday, and his wife in Chicago and parents in India have been notified. The family is now working on arrangements to have his body sent to India.
This is the second body found in the Tidal Basin in as many weeks.
Potharaju was a tech engineer, in D.C. for contract work and was visiting relatives. He excused himself to find a restroom near the FDR Memorial but never returned. His family found his rental car where he parked it near the Old Post Office, and there has been no activity on his cell phone or credit cards.
This is the second body to found in water in the past week. A fisherman found the body of another man at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Potomac River.
