Michigan highway murder suicide: Lisa Somers dead, daughter Amedy Dewey clinging to life, David Somers’ motive uncertain
The Ionia County Sheriff still has no clear indication of a motive in the bizarre murder-suicide along I-96 in Michigan which left David Somers, 50, and his wife, Lisa Somers, 50, lying dead off the roadway from gunshot wounds, and a loaded shotgun beneath David.
In the backseat of the SUV with a gunshot wound to the head, police found Lisa’s daughter, Amedy Dewey, 18. Amedy is n critical but stable condition at a hospital in Grand Rapids as of Monday evening. Friends say she was placed on a feeding tube Monday.
David Somers’ only child, his daughter, Shelbi Somers, 23, may have insight into the tragedy, explaining that her father had been dealing with a brain tumor diagnosis for about a year and had an operation Friday morning, the day the before the shooting. She said her father told her that doctors were able to remove “most of” the tumor in a surgery through his nasal cavity.
David’s parents, Tom and Shirley Somers, confirmed the same story to FOX 17: their son was fighting a brain tumor that was discovered about a year ago, and recently his doctor told David they needed to operate to try to remove it.
While they say David’s behavior would change recently during episodes, they saw no red flags but urge anyone who needs help to seek out that help.
“He’s always been our rock,” said Tom Somers of his son David. “Never any problems with him, always willing to help you do something. We just had a lot of faith in him.”
Investigators say that David had picked up Lisa and Amedy at Gerald R. Ford International Airport as they were returning from a vacation on Saturday. The family was from Kaleva, Mich., in Manistee County.
The Ionia County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate with Manistee area law enforcement and say at this point there is no clear motive.
A family friend started this GoFundMe page for Amedy’s extensive medical needs and her mother’s funeral.
