Michelle Dockery discusses Lady Mary moving on in ‘Downton Abbey’ season 4
The Crawleys are back for a fourth season in the hit show Downton Abbey. One of the key storylines is how Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, will recover from Matthew’s sudden death.
Dockery spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the character’s state and life beyond Dan Steven’s character.
”Mary can’t move on and I don’t think [she] will for a long time,” says Dockery. ”But everyone around her is trying to bring her out of this dark spell that she’s under.”
EW continues to preview the hit show stating: “Meanwhile, Lady Edith’s (Laura Carmichael) romance with her newspaper editor still hangs in the balance, Cousin Rose (Lily James) dallies with a black jazz singer, and an electric mixer spells trouble for Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol). Bates (Brendan Coyle) and Anna (Joanne Froggatt) will also face a major trauma this season that throws off their happy ending.”

“Season 4 kicks off six months after Matthew’s death, and while Lady Mary is in a depressive slough, there are signs of life,” the article begins before quoting the show’s creator Julian Fellowes.
“The moment I realized we could have a six month gap,” says Fellowes, “I realized we could also have a disagreement about how Mary’s doing and how we should be looking after her.”
EW sets up the storyline for season 4: “In order to help Mary move forward, Robert (Hugh Bonneville) and Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) gently nudge a new suitor — Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) — in their daughter’s direction, though Gillingham will have to compete with another man, Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden), who emerges later in the season.
Maggie Smith, Shirley MacLaine, and Paul Giamatti also star.
