Michael Dunn guilty charge gives Jordan Davis’ parents some relief
Nearly two years after the incident, Michael Dunn was found guilty of the shooting and killing Jordan Davis. The Florida shooting has made national headlines, linked to the controversial “Stand Your Ground” laws as Dunn claimed the loud music was the instigation for a tragic confrontation.
Davis, 17, was shot and killed in November 2012 and Dunn was found guilty last week. Now the parents speak out to the press, attempting to described their emotions.
“Words cannot express our joy but also our great sorrow, because with the verdicts of all counts being guilty for Michael Dunn, we know that Jordan has received his justice,” said Lucia McBath, Jordan’s mother to WJXT, channel 4 in Jacksonville, Fla.
“We know that Jordan’s life and legacy will live on for others, but at the same time we’re very saddened by the life that Michael Dunn will continue to live. We are saddened for his family and for his friends and community that will continue to suffer by his actions.”
The jury deliberatied after they heard Dunn was found guilty in February (his first trial) on three counts of attempted murder and firing into an occupied vehicle, but a mistrial was declared on the first-degree murder charge when the jury remained deadlocked after 28 hours of deliberations.
“I am so thankful in this moment,” Ron Davis said the news outlet. “The Lord has given me peace throughout this whole retrial. As I get on my knees at night, I would always pray just for peace, not the outcome but just for peace whatever the outcome would be.”
Jordan was with three other teens, parked next to Dunn at a Jacksonville gas station. Dunn asked the teenagers to turn down the volume of their music. From the back passenger seat, Davis refused and the two exchanged words.
Dunn says he opened fire because he saw the barrel of a gun pointed out the back window at him, though police found no weapon.
Sentencing will be heard later this month.
